Where does “Illkirch-Graffenstaden” come from?
Illkirch is recorded as early as the 8th century. Its name combines the river Ill that crosses the town and the Alsatian word Kirch (“church”), referring to the church dedicated to Saint Symphorian built on the banks of the Ill — the heart around which the village grew.
Graffenstaden, attested later (around the 13th century), refers to a former manorial estate (the count’s “staden”, Graf).
The merger of the two villages
At the end of the 18th century, between 1790 and 1794, the two neighbouring villages merged into a single town, along the old Colmar road — today’s Route de Lyon, still the town’s main axis.
An industrial past
In the 19th century, Graffenstaden stood out for its industrial activity, notably metalworking and mechanical engineering (foundries, workshops), which drove the town’s growth. Today, Illkirch-Graffenstaden is home to a large innovation park, the University of Strasbourg campus and a green setting awarded the “4 Flowers” label.
